In order to maintain a sustainable competitive advantage in today's marketplace, transportation and logistics
companies must maximize operating efficiency at every stage in the supply chain. To this end, yard and distribution
center operations that today are predominantly driven by paper-based systems present significant opportunities to
companies interested in improving their distribution efficiencies.
Proper yard management requires the ability to track location and status of all vehicles and their associated
inventory throughout the yard – in real-time. Paper-based systems are incapable of providing this type of up-to-date
information. Bar-code based systems for yard management may represent a significant improvement over paper-based
systems, but can fall short of automated, real-time visibility as they depend on human
intervention for data collection.

Manual vehicle and driver check-in/check-out procedures are prone to errors and delays. During peak times, vehicles
may pass through the yard unaccounted for. An automated gate check solution can significantly reduce labor costs,
time to process, and increase accuracy.
Accurate and timely inventory is critical to optimal yard management operations. However, the dynamic and chaotic
nature of the business makes it very difficult to take accurate inventory manually. Taking physical inventory of a
large yard can be a painful process and data can become obsolete and useless immediately after it is taken. In
addition, having complete visibility to which vehicles are in the yard and how long they’ve been sitting is critical
to avoiding detention charges and applying demurrage fees.
In large environments with multiple loading docks, trailers and drivers, delivery trucks can hitch with

properly accounted to ensure accurate delivery to customers and yard security.
